MEET THE TEAM 2023-2024

Co-Editors-in-Chief

Sabina García Ortega | Sabina is a third-year student majoring in English and Philosophy. In her free time, she likes to consume any type of horror media, try new coffee shops, go to museums, and hike. When she was little, her and her sister were convinced a goose named Larry was secretly following them around.

Simona Zaunius | Simona is a third-year student doing an English specialist. When she is not reading or writing for her classes, she can be found reading and writing on her own time! She has two cats, Luna and Tobi, and thinks both would definitely lose in a fight against a goose.

Head Illustrator

Elaine Xiao | Elaine is a second year student in Immunology and Pharmacology and the Head Illustrator for Goose this year. She really enjoys drawing with vine charcoal, and loved creating illustrations for short stories for Goose last year. She is excited to read and draw more this year!

Associate Editors

Tamara Doiny | Tamara is a first-year humanities student, and she is actually terrified of geese. In her free time, she stress-bakes bread, reads mediocre rom-coms, and tells people to wear SPF.

Kenzie Johnston | Kenzie is a second year English Specialist. This is her first year working on The Goose, and she is also an associate editor of the UC Review. She enjoys pottery, any other arts and crafts, and reading, both for class and for fun. She is very excited to read through this year’s submissions!

Mackenzie Melichar | Mackenzie is a writer, editor, and 3rd-year student at Victoria College, majoring in Philosophy and double-minoring in Creative Writing and Political Science. Her work has been published in Kalopsia Literary JournalActa Victoriana, and elsewhere. She is a senior editor at Kalopsia Literary Journal and associate editor at The Verity Review. With a forthcoming website, you can find her in the interim at @the.river.writes on Instagram for updates on her writing, editing, and academic work. In her spare time, she likes to knit, read, listen to Morgan Wallen, and lift weights at Hart House.

Daniyah Pervaiz | Daniyah is in her second year in Rotman Commerce. In her free time she enjoys playing co-op games like Overcooked. She’s all about puzzles too—loves a good challenge. She loves to read, especially when it comes to horror and mystery stuff. She makes it a point to dive into at least one book a month. When she’s not reading, she spends her time playing with her cat Loki! She is very excited to read everyone’s stories.

Devarya Singhania | Devarya is a second-year student pursuing a Specialist in English with a Minor in Creative Writing. His poems have been featured in the UC Review, The Spectatorial, and The Cyril and Methodius Review. Additionally, he has written essays for Acta Victoriana and serves as the founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Woodsworth Review. Devarya stays busy with his passion for creating numerous playlists on Spotify, featuring artists like Dean Lewis, Tom Walker, Taylor Swift, and Noah Kahan. Interestingly, he has a strong aversion to the color yellow, especially when indulging in Superstore repeats.

Kiri Stockwood | Kiri is a fifth-year student double majoring in English and Women & Gender Studies. She has a passion for all kinds of stories, and is incredibly excited to be returning for a second year of editing at the Goose! She actually thinks geese are very cute, but would not recommend letting them get close enough to bite you.

Illustrators

Athen Go | Athen is a third-year Architecture, Visual Studies, and English Student. She is interested in all things art and literature, dabbling in any medium she can get her hands on. But whether it’s through words, drawings, or designing the built environment, Athen considers herself to be a storyteller at heart. She does not know much about wild geese, but does love Mary Oliver’s poem by the same name.

Kasia Kaczmarek | Kasia is a first-year Life Sci illustrator-Varisty writer here to bring your creative ideas to monochrome life! You can find her walking across campus at odd hours of the day, excited to see whether something will catch her interest may it be a person, leaf, or bug. She is fearless about geese, but probably only because her friends pull her away before the goose exacts its unimaginable goosey fury upon her. She is very excited to collaborate with you! Feel free to look at her art @Kazsiu on Instagram.

Biew Biew Sakulwannadee | Biew Biew is a second year history student at Vic college. When she’s not panicking and procrastinating over her latest assignment, you can find her animatedly gesticulating about her latest TV or movie hyperfixation (recent watches include Good Omens, Shadow and Bone, and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off). Challenge her to a game of Super Smash Bros or a Hades Speedrun, it will totally be fun! P.S Just don’t let her pick Cloud or Chiron’s Bow…

Layout Editors

Charlyn Ann Lapak | Charlyn is a part-time undergrad in the Art History major, with minors in East Asian Studies and Contemporary Asian Studies. When she’s not studying, working part-time jobs, or committing to too many extracurriculars, she’s probably starting a random art project she won’t finish. When Charlyn first attended elementary school in Canada, she had to commute by walking through a football field with a herd of aggressive Canadian Geese and their fecal waste. Every day for two years, she ran away from them as they honked and chased her while she was trying to get home or go to class. She misses them very much and hopes they’re doing okay. She’s excited to help with the Goose’s layout editing team and can’t wait to see how we can visually arrange short story fiction this year!

Brisa Liu | Brisa is an avid fanfiction reader and writer with a penchant for angst, heartbreak, and sad endings. She loves all kinds of noodles and eats just as fast as she can get hungry. Graphic design is her unlikely passion! Catch her rabid obsessions and ramblings on her art account! (@okie.itsfine on Instagram).
